Capileira name means "high place" and for being a place of difficult access, it was among the last places to be conquered first by Arabs and later by Christians, being the scene of several battles.

Two of the most visited destinations in the area are Eras de Aldeire and Refugio which is 2.500 meters above sea level, an excellent place for excursions to the peaks of the Veleta and Mulhacén.
